The iPhone has very few differences between them so it can be confusing to the not-so-conscious buyer.  Here is how you can tell which iPhone you have.

The iPhone 4S – The latest iPhone in the mobile phone series from Apple looks exactly like the iPhone 4.  However, the difference now is that it has an 8 megapixel camera, and it is the only iPhone that offers a 64GB capacity along with the usual 16GB and 32GB offerings.  The iPhone 4S also has a smaller silent switch on the side and the volume buttons have moved to be slightly lower than the previous model of the iPhone.

The iPhone 4 – Probably the game-changer of the entire iPhone series, the iPhone 4 was a total departure from the previous models.  It had a glass front panel, a glass back panel and was wrapped in an aluminium antenna mechanism developed entirely by Apple.  The back camera was upgraded to 5 megapixels and a front camera was introduced for video calls, more specifically for FaceTime.  The iPhone 4 also was offered in black and in white, GSM (with sim) and CDMA (non-sim) models.

The iPhone 3GS – The 3GS was built for speed.  This was a significant upgrade to the previous model.  However, there was no obvious physical change to the phone itself.  It still looked like the 3G and this confused a lot of people.  There is no doubt that there must have been a few people selling their 3G units and passing it off as a 3GS.  So what was the difference?  The iPhone 3GS print on the back case was shiny silver just like the Apple logo.  This was not the case with the previous model.  It also now had the capability of recording video with its back camera which was also improved.  Like the 3G, the iPhone 3GS came in black and white options but now included a higher capacity device at 32GB storage.

The iPhone 3G – Obviously, the difference between this and the predecessor is that the iPhone started to support 3G networks.  The iPhone 4G also sported a new design.  It had a curved back and came in two colors, black and white.  The iPhone 3G also marked the end of the 4GB capacity iPhone.  The iPhone 3G was built with a camera with no video-taking capabilities.

The iPhone – The original iPhone was introduced and released in 2007.  It had an aluminium back and came in 3 different capacities: 4, 8, and 16 gigabyte models.  It is the only model that Apple released with an aluminium back.  The original iPhone did not support 3G data networks.
